Chris Nottage, University of Nottingham

Biography

I have worked as Head of Networks at the University of Nottingham for 3.5 years and manage a team of 16 covering all aspects of Voice and Data services. I have over 30 years' experience working in IT in both technical and management roles. At Bass Brewers I worked initially as a Unisys Mainframe Computer Operator before moving into roles in Business Analysis, Network Engineering (including the installation of Novell local area networks across the UK), and Project Management (supervising the implementation of local and wide area networks across locations in Spain, and Italy. As Head of Programme management (EMEA and AP) at Marconi, I was involved in a number of Global project initiatives, eventually moving to Accenture as a Network Service Lead, responsible for leading a team of engineers providing support and project delivery for a number of client accounts. Finally, before joining the University of Nottingham I worked at HMV as Network and Infrastructure Manager

Abstract

International Networking

The presentation will focus on the following areas:

• The Networking issues that were experienced communicating to the Asian campuses in China and Malaysia over the internet historically and the justification for the implementation of the ICN (International Campus Network)

• The issues and challenges faced with setting up the ICN networking infrastructure at the remote (international) campuses and how these issues were resolved

• The on-going management of the ICN and relationship with the managed service supplier of wide area network services

• A summary of the recent re-procurement initiatives, testing undertaken with Janet on internet performance over the internet i.e. VC performance testing between campuses, and potential future development
